The pier at Roberts Creek is a favourite place of mine. I often take my camera  as I stretch my legs and organize my thoughts and plans for the day. On this particular outing the tide was high so the birds were flying quite close to my position on the end of the pier. I watched for awhile then decided that I wanted to portray the motion and mechanics of flight while still representing the gull itself. After many different exposures I like this one the best. At first glance you see an interesting shape on a soft palette, then you recognize the head and body of the Gull.

Forest Impression, Edge of Clearing https://deanvantschip.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/3/forest-impression Winter is a great time for photography, especially landscapes. I captured this Forest Impression using the vertical panning technique with a slow shutter speed on the slopes of Mount Elphinstone above Roberts Creek here on the Sunshine Coast. The snow in the background added some reflected fill-light, creating more contrast on the trees and a bit more detail on the forest floor. I'm pleased with the way the vertical lines and bark texture of the trees carry the eye down the trunks and into the earthy tones of the underbrush. Falling Snow https://deanvantschip.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/2/falling-snow Welcome to my website!

I will be posting a recent image at least once every month.

I spend a lot of time hiking with my camera in the mountain trails here on the Sunshine Coast and on this occasion I was lucky to have a fresh snowfall to add another element to my images.

As I made my way up one of the trails the wind started to pick up and snow began to fall from the branches in clouds to the forest floor below. I had to shield the camera and moved in close to a tree trunk as I made the decision to attempt to capture the motion of the falling snowflakes using a slow shutter speed to convey movement.

I like the way each snowflake has it's own fractal-like chaotic motion on it's individual descent, reminding me of the drip technique used in some of the abstract works of the painter Jackson Pollock.

I'm very pleased with the way this image turned out and look forward to my future hikes in our beautiful forests.

Thanks for your interest,

Dean. Falling Snow #1, Roberts Creek, B.C.Falling Snow #1, Roberts Creek, B.C.Forest Impression, Panning with snow falling from branches, Roberts Creek, B.C.
